Mar 17, 2020

You may know Kantwon Rogers as an instructor for CS 1371, or as a Peer Leader in Smith ... but Kantwon, HP Alum, is also currently a 2nd year Computer Science PhD student! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

From Huntsville Alabama, Kantwon received his BS Computer Engineering in 2015, his MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2016 and his MS in Human-Computer Interaction in 2018. Now, he is pursuing his PhD in Computer Science. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

Kantwon chose to do a PhD in Computer Science because of his passion for research in computer science education. “I’ve always wanted to better the lives of other people, and nowadays, computer science allows you to do that in any domain and at a very large scale.” ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

His research now revolves around child-robot interaction, particularly how children come to trust robots and how they choose to deceive them or are able to be deceived by them. “Most of the current work in understanding trust with robots only looks at adults, but as more and more robots enter our societies, we will have to be mindful of how they interact with all types of people.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

Kantwon attributes his experiences becoming a computer science TA and now an instructor as among the best things to have happened to him. “I also worked at Intel and Google which were mind-boggling experiences.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

Kantwon enjoys singing, playing sports and playing video games, and idolizing Serena Williams. With the hope of graduating from his PhD in the next 4 years, he hopes to become a professor. “One of my life goals is to start my own middle school.”
